Wondering what’s on over the summer holidays for families? Check out our What’s On guide.
The Lake District may be best known for its mountains, lakes, and endless walking trails, but many visitors forget that the coast is within easy reach too. Located just outside the Lake District National Park boundary, Haverigg Beach is a lovely change of pace from the usual fell walks and tourist hotspots.
For families looking to swap hiking boots for buckets and spades, this underrated stretch of the Cumbrian coast makes a fantastic day out with kids.

Parking
A nice perk of visiting Haverigg Beach is the easy parking. There’s a large free layby directly behind the beach, with plenty of space even on warmer days.
A handy tip for first-timers; avoid parking directly beside the beach access path, as this is usually where the ice cream van sets up around lunchtime. After several visits, this definitely seems to be an unspoken local arrangement.
What to Expect at the Beach
Haverigg Beach is wonderfully family-friendly. The wide sandy shoreline offers plenty of space to spread out, and even on sunny days it rarely feels overcrowded. In fact, on quieter visits, families may find they have huge stretches almost entirely to themselves.
The gently sloping beach makes it ideal for younger children, with the tide rolling in slowly enough for safe paddling while still providing endless entertainment as moats gradually fill and carefully built sandcastles inevitably disappear.
The beach is also unusually flat for the Lake District, making it perfect for beach games, picnics, and easy wandering with little ones. Along the back of the beach sit large rocks that children naturally gravitate towards for climbing, while also providing some welcome shelter from coastal winds.

Eating Options
There are several easy options for food and treats close to the beach.
- The ice cream van usually arrives around lunchtime and is ideal for a quick seaside treat.
- A short walk along the beach brings visitors to Betty’s Beach Hut, serving hot food, snacks, and takeaway options.
- Just across the road, Harbour Lights Campsite is home to Riva Gelato, a lovely little coffee and ice cream spot serving cakes, drinks, and excellent gelato.
Campsite
For families wanting to turn a beach day into a longer stay, Harbour Lights Campsite sits directly opposite the beach. Its location couldn’t be better, allowing easy access to the sand while also offering handy facilities nearby. In fact, we love it so much, it’s included in our round up of the best family campsites in the Lake District.

Final Thoughts
Not every Lake District day out needs to involve walking boots and scenic viewpoints. Haverigg Beach offers something completely different, with wide open sand, plenty of space for beach games, and a slower pace than many classic days out in the Lakes.
Sometimes, stepping just beyond the national park boundary is well worth it.
