Wondering what’s on over the summer holidays for families? Check out our What’s On guide.
Just outside the Lake District National Park boundary and overlooking Morecambe Bay, Grange-over-Sands offers something a little different from a typical Lake District day out. While there’s no beach for sand-play and paddling here (the shoreline is mostly tidal flats and salt marsh) the long, flat promenade makes a refreshing change from the fells, with plenty of space for scooters and bikes. Plus, beside parking fees and paying for an ice-cream, this is a free activity!

Where is Grange-over-Sands Promenade?
Grange-over-Sands sits on the southern fringe of the Lake District, with lovely views stretching across Morecambe Bay towards Arnside. The town grew during the Victorian era, and much of that character remains today, with elegant old buildings, independent shops, and a handful of great cafés.

Things to Do at Grange-over-Sands Promenade
There’s enough here to easily fill a few relaxed hours:
The Playground
The recently renovated playground is one of the best reasons to visit with younger children. Set slightly above the promenade itself, it has fantastic views over the bay; although, understandably, most children are far more interested in climbing, sliding, and pretending to be pirates than admiring the scenery.
Scoot, Cycle or Stroll the Promenade
Flat ground is something of a novelty in the Lake District, which is exactly why Grange works so well for families. The promenade is ideal for scooters, bikes, roller skates, or simply an easy walk with younger children. Even on busier weekends, there’s generally enough space for everyone.

The Skate Park
The skate park has been here for years and remains hugely popular. Older children will enjoy the ramps and challenges, while younger ones often find their own entertainment simply climbing and scrambling around when it’s quiet.
Stop for a Café Break
For a relatively small town, Grange does cafés surprisingly well.
There’s a small kiosk beside the playground serving drinks and ice creams (brew? – yes, that’s the name), while a second café further along the promenade towards Kents Bank (aptly named Promenade Café) offers simple meals, hot drinks, and outdoor seating overlooking the bay. Perfect for breaking up your visit.
Outdoor Exercise Equipment
Near Promenade Café you’ll find an outdoor exercise area that, admittedly, has seen better days. That said, children seem to absolutely love it. Most of the equipment is technically designed for older users, but younger children usually enjoy having a go with a bit of supervision.
Recreation Park
Further along towards Kents Bank sits the Grange Promenade Recreation Park, which includes:
- Crazy golf
- Putting green
- Tennis courts
- Basketball court
Equipment can be hired on site, and in our experience it rarely gets too busy.
Watch the Trains
One feature younger train lovers always appreciate is the railway line running right alongside parts of the promenade. In places, the trains pass so close you can see straight inside the carriages!

Good to Know Before You Visit
Toilets
Public toilets are located near the outdoor exercise area opposite the old lido. At the time of writing, payment is contactless only.
Grange Lido
One of the more unusual sights along the promenade is the boarded-up Grange Lido. Opened in 1932, this Grade II listed seawater lido closed in the early 1990s. There have been ongoing efforts to restore it, and for now you can peek through viewing windows in the fencing to imagine what it once looked like.
Ornamental Gardens
Locally known simply as ‘the duck pond’, the Grange-over-Sands Ornamental Gardens sit on the opposite side of the railway station (click here for Google Map location). If you’re parking nearby, it’s well worth combining both into one easy family outing.

The Lake District Kids verdict
Grange-over-Sands Promenade is one of those easy family mornings or afternoons out that works at almost any age. It’s flat, spacious, relaxed, and offers something quite different from the usual Lake District adventure.
If you’ve spent the week climbing hills and exploring forests, this is a lovely change of pace, fresh sea air included.
